Trash Pickup

Residential household refuse is collected once per week on the designated collection day for the block you live on. Trash must be placed at the curb no earlier than 7pm prior to the collection day.

Bulk Items

Bulk items such as household furniture, mattresses, and large appliances, as well as bundled tree and hedge trimmings may also be placed at the curb for collection on your designated day. There is no charge for residential properties of under 3 units. However, you must call the Department of General Services (434-CITY) at least 24 hours in advance to obatin this service.

Recycling

Recyclables are collected weekly on the same day as your regular trash pickup. The City of Albany provides each residential refuse customer with a recycling container, " Blue Box", at no charge. Recyclables that so not fit in the recycling bin may be placed in a brown paper bag next to the recycling container.

Households are required to recycle the following:

  • Newspapers, Magazines, Telephone books*
  • Glass containers
  • Metal containers
  • Plastic containers (ALL recycle codes now accepted!)
  • "Gable top" cartons and drink boxes
  • Corrugated Cardboard**

    *Paper products should be put in brown paper bags and placed in the bin.
    **Corrugated cardboard should be broken down, bundled up and placed by the recycling container.

    Leaf Collection

    Leaf collection starts April 1st and goes through mid October early November depending on weather. Leaf Bags will be collected between 3-11 on your scheduled trash pick up day. The leaves must be placed in a brown leaf and lawn refuse bag and placed curbside.

    Bags available from many area nurseries, home improvement and hardware store. They can also be purchased from the city at various locations for a fee of 3 for a $1.00.

    NOTE: It is a violation of city code to rake leaves into the street.

    Special Conditions

    An exemption from curbside requirement may be granted to individuals who are physically unable to place their trash at the curb. Inquires about exemption may be made to the Department of General Services at 434-CITY.

    Holidays

    Holidays no longer have any effect on the day of your trash and recycling pickup.
